El hemograma o análisis de sangre, es una prueba médica de gran importancia para conocer el funcionamiento sanguíneo de nuestro sistema. Es un examen de sangre que evalúa el estado de salud en general y puede detectar, monitorizar o diagnosticar enfermedades como anemia, leucemia, cánceres, trastornos hemorrágicos e infecciones.

El hemograma se realiza con una muestra de sangre obtenida por punción venosa, o en un dedo, para analizar un recuento sanguíneo de las tres células principal: glóbulos blancos, glóbulos rojos y plaquetas. Cabe señalar, además, que no se requiere de ayuno previo, por lo cual, se puede realizar en cualquier momento.

Con un conteo de este tipo de células es posible confirmar el diagnóstico de las enfermedades señaladas anteriormente, según si estas células están sobre o bajo el rango normal. También permite detectar respuestas adversas a diferentes tratamientos.

Considerando que cada una de estas células tiene funciones determinadas, el déficit o exceso de éstas puede ser indicador de diferentes condiciones, infecciones o patologías.

¿Qué mide el hemograma?

El hemograma completo evalúa las células de la sangre, midiendo la cantidad y las características estructurales de los diferentes tipos celulares que se encuentran en la sangre, como son:

•  Glóbulos rojos o eritrocitos: conocidos también como hematíes, se encargan de llevar el oxígeno desde los pulmones a todo el sistema sanguíneo. Un recuento de estos glóbulos, nos puede decir la cantidad de hemoglobinaque tenemos en la sangre, la cual se encarga de dar el oxígeno que necesitan. Además, podemos saber si sufrimos anemia, la cual es causada por una falta de glóbulos rojos.
•  Glóbulos blancos o leucocitos: existen varios tipos de glóbulos blancos, se dedican especialmente a evitar infecciones y alergias. Estas se presentan en menor cantidad que los glóbulos rojos. Una disminución de estos glóbulos, puede bajar las defensas del cuerpo, con lo cual, estaríamos más expuestos a diferentes infecciones y bacterias.
•  Plaquetas: son uno de los tipos de glóbulos blancos, conocidos como trombocitos. Su papel en el sistema sanguíneo es muy importante, se encargan de coagular la sangre adecuadamente, esto con el fin de evitar hemorragias. Las plaquetas se agrupan cuando el cuerpo sufre una herida o un brote de sangre, esto crea un bloqueo para que la sangre deje de salir y se coagule. La elevación de plaquetas podría ser una alerta, un aumento repentino podría indicarnos síntomas de una enfermedad tan fuerte como el cáncer.

Otras mediciones importantes que realiza este examen de sangre son:

•  Hemoglobina: que es la proteína de los glóbulos rojos y que realiza el transporte de oxígeno.
•  Hematocrito: que es la proporción de glóbulos rojos respecto del componente líquido o «plasma» de la sangre.

¿Cuándo es necesario realizar un hemograma?

El hemograma se solicita por distintos motivos. Los más frecuentes son:

• Control del estado de salud. El médico puede recomendarle un hemograma completo como parte de un examen médico de rutina para controlar el estado de salud general y para detectar diversos trastornos, como anemia, trastornos hemorrágicos o leucemia.

• Diagnóstico de enfermedades. El doctor puede indicar un hemograma completo si tienes síntomas como: debilidad, fatiga, fiebre, inflamación, hematomas o hemorragias. Un hemograma completo puede ayudar a diagnosticar la causa de estos signos y síntomas.

• Monitorización de un tratamiento médico. El hemograma sirve para analizar la eficacia de un tratamiento, por ejemplo, la acción de un medicamento, evaluando el efecto de este sobre el recuento de células sanguíneas.

Es importante conocer la calidad de nuestro sistema sanguíneo, por eso, un hemograma debe realizarse como algo rutinario una vez al año, si todo sale bien, pero si el médico indica que tenemos problemas con los glóbulos rojos, blancos o plaquetas, debemos hacerlo cada seis meses. Es necesario estar al tanto de lo que ocurre con nuestro sistema inmunológico, y de esta manera, poder evitar cualquier tipo de enfermedades. Ya que, como señalamos anteriormente, este examen tiene la capacidad de confirmar un diagnóstico o detectar enfermedades.
